Amex Adds New Limit of 10 Charge Cards
American Express could have a new rule for credit cards. It’s well known that Amex limits you to a total of five credit cards from American Express at any one time. Some people report going up to six cards, but five is the consensus. However this five card limit only applies to credit cards, not charge cards.
Until now you would be able to apply for a charge card even if you already had five credit cards and there was really no limit on how many American Express charge cards you could have. But a new data point from reddit shows that there might now be a limit of 10 charge cards.
Based on an Amex rep, they have “recently implemented a 10 charge cards per account rule similar to the 5 lending card rule.” So if you already have 10 charge cards, you would have to drop to 9 cards in order to apply for a new one.
Charge Cards
Charge Cards are cards where cardholders must pay back the entire amount they borrow each month upon the due date. These cards do not have a hard credit limit like credit cards. These are the American Express charge cards available:
- American Express® Green Card
- American Express® Business Green Card
- The Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
- American Express® Gold Card
- American Express® Business Gold Card
- Centurion® Card from American Express
Guru’s Wrap-up
Looks like a reasonable limit, considering that it should be enough to have each charge card offered by American Express. But once you get into multiples of the same charge card, then you could have issues with this new limit. Let me know if you have hit this limit or been told anything similar by Amex reps.
why would you have more than one? don’t you have to pay the annual fee on each one?
