Most People Being Denied Match to 80K Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus

Chase is usually pretty good at matching better welcome offers on their cards for people who have recently applied for a lesser bonus. If you have applied and been approved within the last 90 days, Chase will usually match you if a better offer comes out. However. it looks like this is not happening with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card this time around.

Chase Sapphire Preferred has a new increased welcome offer of 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points for spending $4,000 within three months of card membership. The previous offer was only 60,000 points. So people who have recently applied, have contacted Chase to get matched for an extra 20,000 points. But a thread in r/creditcard is full of data points of people being denied, either over the phone or through secured message.

Only one data point in that thread shows a positive outcome, and it is a strange one. This was for an approval back in February 15 for the 60K bonus. They asked for a match via secured message on September 14, 2020 and 20K points were deposited on September 15, 2020.
