When news of the new Chase Freedom Flex first came out, it was said that the Freedom Flex and the old Freedom card would be considered as the same product. It was more of a replacement of the old Freedom card than a completely new card.

But now new information from TPG and DoC confirms that the new Chase Freedom Flex card is a completely separate products from both current cards, the Freedom and the Freedom Unlimited cards.

Current Freedom cardholders will have the option to upgrade to the new Freedom Flex card, but they can also choose to just keep their cards and separately apply for Freedom Flex.

Why That Matters

New credit cards mean new options to get welcome bonuses. So the fact that Freedom Flex is a new product means that you can get the welcome bonus for the Chase Freedom card now and then, once the Freedom Flex comes out, you can apply and get the bonus for that card too. The 24 month limitation will not apply, since they are different cards. And don’t forget about the Freedom Unlimited, that is yet another welcome bonus that you can get.

All three cards currently have the same bonus and it is a great one considering that these are all no-fee cards. You can get each welcome bonus separately and since the Freedom card will no longer be available once the Freedom Flex comes out, you should apply for the old Freedom card now if you’ve been eyeing it already.

Guru’s Wrap-up

This is great news. You can separately get the welcome bonus for the Chase Freedom card now and then the Chase Freedom Flex in two weeks. You can also go for the same bonus on the Chase Freedom Unlimited. That would be $600 in cash and 5% cash back on grocery store purchases for the first year on up to $36,000 if you are able to get all three cards. The Chase Freedom Unlimited welcome bonus is also available through referrals, so if someone can refer you they will also get an extra $100.

However keep in mind that Chase 5/24 rules still apply for these cards.
