Get Extra 3X Points for 3 Months with Amex Referrals

Update: This limited-time offer is available to all eligible American Express Consumer Card Members. 

• Beginning today, if a consumer Card Member refers a friend for any consumer or business Card product between October 1 – October 28, and their friend gets approved, Card Members will earn 3x more points (or 3% more cash back) per dollar they spend for the next three months, while their friend receives one of the most rewarding welcome offers available. Terms and eligibility apply (Card Member login required).
• As soon as they are approved, newly referred Card Members are also eligible to refer a friend to take advantage of these 3x bonus points.

When you refer someone, you will receive an email that will let you know that you are now eligible to earn an extra 3X in points or 3% cashback for three months.

American Express has introduced a new type of incentive for referring friends to sign up for credit cards. Besides the regular referral bonuses that you earn, this month you can also get an extra 3X Membership Rewards points when you refer a friend.

In my Amex Platinum Card’s referral page for example, I see the following:

• You can earn: 20,000 Membership Rewards® points for each approved referral – up to 55,000 Membership Rewards® points per calendar year. Plus enjoy the limited time referral offer.
  • Refer a Friend to apply between 10/1 and 10/28. Once they’re approved, you will earn 3 more Membership Rewards Points per dollar you spend for three months.

Offer Terms

Qualifying Card Members will receive an additional three (3) rewards per eligible dollar spent on their Card account (for the Card referred) for three (3) months, starting from the date the referral results in an approved account. The additional three (3) rewards will be applied to rewards categories for which eligible purchases are rewarded with cash back, Membership Rewards® Points, Delta Bonus Miles®, Hilton Honors Bonus Points or Marriott Bonvoy Points. The following are some examples of how qualifying Card Members will earn additional rewards during the 3-month offer period:

• A Blue Cash Everyday® Card Member who typically earns, among other rewards, 2% cash back at U.S. Gas Stations and 1% cash back on other purchases will earn 5% cash back at U.S. Gas Stations (2% + additional 3%) and 4% cash back on other purchases (1% + additional 3%) during the 3-month offer period.
• A Green Card Member who typically earns, among other rewards, 3X Membership Rewards® Points on Restaurants will earn 6X (3X + additional 3 Points) during the 3-month offer period

For qualifying Amex EveryDay® Card Members, points awarded under this offer will not be included when we calculate Extra Points.

Guru’s Wrap-up

This is a huge opportunity that makes applying through a referral link even more profitable. Being able to get a boost of 3 extra points for 3 months is probably even better than the actual referral bonuses of 20K or even 30K. Check your referral pages here, and see if you are targeted. But going too crazy with spending on American Express credit cards, might be a problem as we have seen recently.
