Plastiq Warning, Visa Payments Might Code As Cash Advance

Plastiq is a service that lets you pay bills using a credit card. You can pay your mortgage, rent, utilities, tuition or even a small business, maybe a contractor that fixes your roof. They accept Visa, Mastercard and Amex as forms of payments and charge a fee everytime you pay a bill.

They currently have a promo with lowered fees. You can pay with a Mastercard for a 1.75% Fee or Amex for a 2.25% Fee. Visa card will have the normal 2.5% fee.

When trying to pay with a Visa card, Plastiq is now showing a warning that the payment might process as cash advance.

WE RECOMMEND PAYING WITH A DIFFERENT CARD FOR THIS PAYMENT

Visa requires cash advance treatment for credit card payments to recipients who do not yet have a relationship with Plastiq. As such we recommend using a MasterCard, American Express, or Visa debit card for this payment.

The Plastiq team works quickly to build relationships with all new payment recipients, so the next time you pay <what you’re trying to pay>, you will likely be able to use your Visa credit card without issues. You can also speed up this process by sending your recipient to plastiq.com/business to sign up for free.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out tosupport@plastiq.com.

The issue seems to be for new payees only and is not related to the card you’re using. It’s not affecting Mastercard or Amex. If you see the warning you should probably not go through with the payment. Cash Advances with Visa will cost you a fee from the card issuer and you also won;t earn any miles/points. Cash Advances don’t count towards minimum spend requirements either, if that’s what you’re going after.
