American Express Now Has a Limit of 4 Credit Cards
In the last few days we have seen many data points that American Express might have lowered the total number of cards that they allow fo each customer. Until now you were able to have up to 5 American Express credit cards, and 6 in some rare cases. The count includes personal and business American Express credit cards, not charge cards. There is a separate new limit on charge cards that was introduced in April of this year.
Amex 4 Credit Card Limit
Doctor of Credit first reported about the possible new limit of 4 cards a few days ago. The news about the lower limit came from people calling in and asking about denials. Now American Express has also confirmed on Twitter to Miles to Memories that there is indeed a new 4 credit card limit for American Express customers.
Yes, we do have limits on Lending Consumer and Lending Business cards. The limit is four total of Consumer or Business lending cards.
The confirmation on Twitter gives the new rule some more credibility. Some data points show that some people are still able to get a 5th credit card. So it could be possible that the rule is slowly being rolled out and might not be a hard rule doe everyone yet.
How Does it Affect You
A lower limit of credit cards makes it more difficult to choose the cards that you want out of the American Express lineup. American Express has a wide variety of cards, so picking out the best four is not easy and will also vary depending on your needs.
It is also harder now to get a new card, if you already have 5 American Express credit cards like I do. You need to close two of them in order to apply for a new card.
Guru’s Wrap-up
American Express first implemented a limit on charge cards and now has lowered the limit on credit cards to 4. While the charge card limit of 10 doesn’t really affect many people, the new limit on credit cards might make you get back to your drawing board and rethink your application strategy.
Let me know which would be your top 4 American Express credit cards if you could apply right now.
