American Express Waiving Fees During Coronavirus Pandemic

As coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on the economy, many companies are offering some type of relief to customers. American Express is one of them. The credit card issuer is waiving fees and interest for some customers. It is also discussing payment options and financial hardship programs with customers who are having trouble making payments. You can find more details about these programs here.

Some data points from reddit show that all you need to do is call and ask. One person says that American Express waived “all credit card payments this billing cycle” and will charge no fee. He also received “10k MR points for being on hold for about 20 minutes”.

TPG also has similar reports, even when contacting American Express through the chat feature. Cardholders were offered relief from interest, late fees and other fees on both their personal and business American Express cards when requesting help.

American Express does not have an official policy yet, so this is a case by case basis. The chat could be the better option, since it gives you something in writing. But, if that doesn’t work, then call in if you are having financial trouble and can not pay your American Express bill right now.

Let me know if you have had a similar, or different experience, with American Express and other issuers.

  1. I called in earlier today. They offered me no fees and no interest for skipping March payment. No MR points.
