Air Canada Aeroplan Status Match for US Based Frequent Flyers

Update: There’s a new status match chart starting from October 1st. The only change is that Southwest Companion Pass will match to Aeroplan 50K instead of 75K. This Status Match has not been a very smooth process for everyone, but hopefully those of you with Companion Pass can get it done by the end of September.

Canada wants Americans to start flying north. As part of the country renewed efforts to revive crucial traffic from the United States, government tourism body Destination Canada is offering complimentary Aeroplan elite status to US frequent flyers.

Under the plan, US based passengers who have status with carriers like American Airlines, Southwest Airlines Co and Delta Air Lines could get matching status when flying Air Canada. Frequent-flyer status it not something you can normally earn easily. But it has been easier than normal during the pandemic with these status match offers and promotions. Elite status is a valuable perk for travelers, with benefits such as priority boarding that would normally cost extra.

This is the first time that Destination Canada funds a status match offer. During the promotion period, you can easily get status through the end of 2021. You can then extend it for one more year when you book and fly one round trip with Air Canada. Let’s see how this promotion works exactly.

Offer

Air Canada is offering Complimentary Aeroplan Elite Status for eligible travelers with US-based airline status. You need to be an Aeroplan member to take advantage of this promotion (free to join here). Approved customers will receive the matched status at no cost until 31 December 2021.

The table below provides the mapping of eligible statuses based on Air Canada’s model:

To keep your Aeroplan status through next year, you must book and fly 1 return trip travelling with Air Canada before midnight on the January 15, 2022. You will then have your status extended until December 31, 2022. If you do not complete the return trip before December 31, 2021, you will lose the Elite status for the period between January 1-15 2022, but your status will be returned as soon as the flight is processed.

Request Status Match

You can get started with your Aeroplan Status Match here.

In the form, you have to provide the name of the U.S. airline that you currently hold status with, your existing status tier and your membership number.

You must upload a photo that verifies your elite status. The photo must include your name, loyalty number and status level. Basically the information that you previously entered. The status match should be normally completed within an hour, but it can take as long as three dyas.

Guru’s Wrap-up

Earning elite status without flying, or spending any money is always a great deal. This promotion comes as Canada has opened up travel for Americans, and the United States is set to reopen in November to vaccinated air travelers from 33 countries.

This offer is useful for those who plan to fly Air Canada in the coming months, or even through next year if you can book a flight to extend your status.

Aeroplan elite members get good discounts on award travel. Aeroplan is a transfer partner for American Express, Capital One and now Chase, so you have many earning options. Chase Aeroplan credit cards are also in the works for US customers.
