United’s Mileage Plus X shopping app or MPX as it is commonly known, is a good way to earn extra miles on gift cards purchases. Until recently it was also possible to earn 5X through the American Express Platinum credit card. MPX codes as “Travel – Airline”, which is a category that earns 5X Membership Rewards after recent upgrades on the card. The Premier Rewards Gold card was also earning 3X.
Now American Express has closed this loophole. MPX purchases are still coding as “Travel – Airline”, but are only earning 1 Membership Rewards points. The changes seems to have happened probably on February 11th as reported by Frequent Miler and also from data points on this FlyerTalk thread.
