Qantas Will Launch Nonstop Sydney-New York Flights
Qantas has confirmed plans to launch nonstop flights between Sydney and New York-JFK in mid-2028, as part of its long-running Project Sunrise program.
The flight is expected to take about 18 hours, cutting at least three hours from the current journey, which requires a stop. In the other direction, the flight will take about 20 hours. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in August 2027.
The New York route will follow Qantas’ planned Sydney-London nonstop service, which is now scheduled to begin in October 2027 after multiple delays.
Project Sunrise Aircraft
Qantas will use specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft for these ultra-long-haul flights. The airline has ordered 12 of the planes, with the first expected to arrive in Australia in April 2027.
The aircraft will have just 238 seats, with a heavy emphasis on premium cabins:
- 6 First Class suites
- 52 Business Class suites
- 40 Premium Economy seats
- 140 Economy seats
The aircraft are designed for missions of up to roughly 22 hours nonstop.
Qantas has also built in dedicated wellbeing zones and other features aimed at making the long flights more manageable for passengers.
