Amex Delays Newark Centurion Lounge to 2027, Makes It Much Bigger
American Express first announced plans for a Centurion Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport back in 2023, with the lounge originally expected to open in 2026. That timeline has now slipped, and Amex says the Newark lounge is expected to open in 2027 instead.
The delay comes with a pretty big upgrade though. The Newark Centurion Lounge was originally planned at around 18,000 square feet, but Amex has now increased the size to more than 30,000 square feet spread across two floors. That will make it the largest Centurion Lounge in the network when it opens.
The new lounge will be located in Terminal A and will take inspiration from New Jersey’s culture and food scene. Amex says the space will include a Blue Roast by American Express Coffee and Wellness Bar, along with three different bar concepts inspired by New Jersey. Food will come from Amex’s Centurion Lounge Culinary Collective, including dishes from James Beard Award-winning chefs.
The three bar areas will include a main bar with cocktails and wine, a specialty bar inspired by New Jersey diner culture, and a terrace bar that pays tribute to the state’s Italian heritage with items like gelato, Italian pastries and cocktails.
Once the Newark lounge opens, American Express will be the first credit card issuer with proprietary lounges at all three major New York City-area airports.
So yes, Newark travelers will have to wait a little longer than originally planned, but this looks like a pretty big upgrade from what was first announced. Going from 18,000 square feet to more than 30,000 square feet should hopefully help with overcrowding, which is one of the biggest complaints about airport lounges these days.
