Hawaiian Airlines announced that it will introduce a “basic economy” product in the second half of 2019. The new class addition will bring it in line with most of its domestic competitors who have already added Basic Economy over the last year. This will make it easier to match other carriers’ fares without hurting unit revenue too much.
What passengers get on basic economy varies across airlines. Passengers in basic economy generally board last and can’t pick their seat assignments. American and United Airlines also prohibit them from using overhead bins.
Hawaiian Airlines also matched its rivals last month by increasing its checked-bag fees on mainland-Hawaii routes.
