DoorDash Will Now Deliver Alcohol in 20 States

DoorDash announced Monday that customers can now buy alcohol directly through its app. The company said the addition of alcohol delivery could increase restaurants’ average order values by 30%.

During the height of the pandemic, as many restaurants closed to in-person dining, some states temporarily relaxed rules around alcohol delivery, providing many eateries with a much needed revenue source. However that option ended when restrictions were lifted.

The new DoorDash alcohol delivery service will be added to 20 new states and the District of Columbia, Canada, and Australia. Before the pandemic the company was only delivering in California and started expanding within the last six months.

DoorDash alcohol delivery is now available only in the following locations:

  • U.S.: California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington
  • Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec
  • Australia: New South Wales and Victoria

Customers of drinking age in their state can toggle the alcohol tab on the DoorDash app to order beer, wine and spirits from a selection of restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores and local retailers. Once the Dasher arrives, the customer presents their government ID which is scanned or manually entered by the Dasher to verify the age of the recipient. The law requires that Dashers cannot deliver the order if the customer is not of legal drinking age in that jurisdiction, their ID is expired, the photo doesn’t match the person, or they appear to be intoxicated. The scope of delivery options varies by location, with some places only allowing alcohol orders from restaurants and some other excluding restaurants.
