Citi is one of the more generous banks when it comes to matching signup offers for credit cards. We usually see different offers for the same Citi card. Some are targeted and some public. Some offers are with bonus points only and others offer points and statement credits. The good thing about Citi is that you can send a message to get matched to the best offer that you see, as long as you’ve applied within the last three months. Citi almost always gave you as much as 20,000 more points if a new better offer was available.
But recently it looks like getting matched to a better current offer is no longer guaranteed. Doctor of Credit reports that some reps are requesting links or proof of mailers for targeted offers. Some others are just refusing to match to a better offer altogether.
That doesn’t mean that Citi has completely stopped matching better signup bonuses for credit cards. But you should be aware that it’s no longer a guarantee that you will get matched. Sometimes people choose to apply for an offer that gives you points and a statement credit and then match to a higher points offer to get another 20,000 miles or points.
Let me know if you have recently asked to get matched by Citi and how it worked out.
