Most readers have probably heard of the AAdvantage Platinum Select Card and the premium AAdvantage Executive Card. But Citi also offers another AA card, the AAdvantage Gold Card. This card comes with a $50 annual fee and is inferior in befits and earning potential when compared to other AA cards from Citi, but it occasionally has targeted increased signup bonuses that make it worthwhile.
Citi has been sending out these targeted offers again. I actually received one offer back in June of 2016, but for only 50,000 bonus miles. Now the offer has been upped to 65K and it has no 24 month restriction either.
Bonus & Requirements
- Spend $4,000 within 4 months of account opening and you’ll earn 55,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles.
- Spend a total of $6,000 within 12 months and you’ll earn another 10,000 AAdvantage bonus miles.
That is 65,000 AAdvantage bonus miles just for using your card. Offer expires 12/15/2017

Citi’s 24-Month Restriction
Citi has tightened up rules regarding sign up bonuses. We usually see the following language on such offers:
American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.
But this offer doesn’t have this language so you will get the bonus even if you have opened or closed a Citi AAdvantage card in the past 24 months. If you were targeted, make sure you carefully look for the restriction in your own offer’s terms.
Guru’s Wrap-Up
This is the best ever offer on the card. The card comes with a $50 annual fee that is waived the first year. It only earns 1 AAdvantage mile for every $1 spent on purchases, so it doesn’t make sense to put any spend on it beyond the required spending for the bonus. It does earn 2 miles per $1 on AA purchases for the first year, but that’s still not intriguing. Other differences with the Platinum Select card are that it doesn’t have a First checked or Group 1 Boarding benefits and it has foreign transaction fees.
