Besides the platinum card, Citi also offers a Gold card. This card isn’t talked about much, since it lags behind other AA Citi cards in benefits and earning rates. But with the new restrictions kicking in soon, everything Citi related becomes more urgent.
Citi has been sending out targeted offers for their Citi AAdvantage Gold card. I actually received the offer back in June, but never wrote about it since I was away for a few days at the time. I applied a month later and was approved. And I’m almost done with the spending requirement. I received this offer probably 1-2 weeks after receiving the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard.
Citi offers up to 50,000 AA miles for the Gold card through this targeted offer, which is the best they’ve ever had. It is broken down in two parts.
- Earn 40,000 AA miles after spending $3,000 in 3 months
- Earn an extra 10,000 AA miles after spending $5,000 in 12 months
The offer is almost as good as on the Platinum Select Mastercard, but it’s a different product so you can apply for this one as well, if you were targeted. In this post by DoC, that reminded me of this card, he also points out that there’s also a lesser targeted offer for 30K AA after 3K spend and $750 in 3 months and an extra 10K AA after $5K spend in 12 months.
The card comes with a $50 annual fee that is waived the first year. It only earns 1 AAdvantage mile for every $1 spent on purchases, so it doesn’t make sense to put any spend on it beyond the required spending for the bonus. Other differences with the Platinum Select card are that it doesn’t have a First checked or Group 1 Boarding benefits and it has foreign transaction fees.
The public offer right now is for 25,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles after making $750 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. You might be able to get matched for the better offer, but it’s not a guarantee.
