Chase United Gateway Card Coming in September

Chase stopped taking new applications for the basic no-fee United TravelBank Card earlier this year. Now it has notified cardholders that the card will soon be gone and replaced with a new product called the Chase United Gateway Card.

A letter sent to current United TravelBank Card holders says the card will convert to the United Gateway Card on September 21. The new revamped card will earn United MileagePlus Rewards for their purchases, instead of TravelBank Cash. Chase United Gateway cardholders will get 2x United MileagePlus miles for every dollar they spend on gas and commuting expenses. That is in addition to the 2x earning rate for the paying for United flights.

Currently, the United TravelBank Card earns 2% in TravelBank cash on United flights and 1.5% back in TravelBank cash on all other purchases. Miles are probably more valuable for most people, so this could be seen as an improvement for some categories. However, one negative aspect is that Price Protection will no longer be available on the new Chase United Gateway Card.
