Buy Hyatt Points with 30% Discount
World of Hyatt is running a promotion where you can buy Hyatt points with a 30% discount. Purchasing hotel and airline points is usually a bad idea, but when there’s a promotion, it could make sense for certain redemptions. Let’s see how the promotion works and whether it’s worth it.

If you buy 5,000 Hyatt points, the minimum required to get the discount, you will pay $84. Regular price would be $120. The price per point with this promotion would be 1.68¢ instead of 2.4¢.

Should You Buy Hyatt Points?
I’m not a fan of buying points. You will never be able to buy points at a price that’s better than the average valuation. If you need a big chunk of points, then welcome bonuses from credit cards are probably the best idea. But buying points could make sense in some instances. If you just need a few thousand points then buying them could be a useful option especially during promotions.
There are properties where you can get a better value than 1.68¢ per point. Hyatt has eight award categories with pricing ranging from 5,000 to 40,000 Hyatt points per night and no blackout dates for award nights. If there’s a standard room available, you should be able to book it with points. And if you are purchasing those points at 1.68¢ each, then each night would cost between $84 for a Cat 1 and $672 for Cat 8.
So there is definitely room to get a big discount even by buying points at 1.68¢. Calala Island for example in Nicaragua costs 40,000 points or over $2,000 per night. Great Scotland Yard Hotel is 25,000 points per night or over $800. Even Hyatt Centric South Beach Miami can cost up to $600 per night, but you can get a room with 20,000 Hyatt points.
While you can get a good valuation you would also have to consider if you would be willing to pay those prices in cash. $600 for a one night stay in South Beach is crazy to me, so just because you get a good point valuation, doesn’t mean that it is a great deal.

Purchasing Hyatt points at 1.68 cents each could be useful but it is not a great deal in my opinion. I would suggest looking at the personal and business Hyatt credit cards first, or transferring from Chase Ultimate Rewards. If you do plan to buy Hyatt points with this promotion, try going through a portal as well to earn some cashback. The points are sold through Points.com, so they do not count as travel. Use a card such as Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express that will get you 2X Membership Rewards points.
