Amex To Limit Centurion Lounge Access For Guests

Lounge access is one of the best perks for frequent travelers who hold one of the Amex Platinum cards. It gives you complimentary access to over 1,000 airport lounges across 120 countries, including The Centurion lounge network, the International American Express lounges, Delta Sky Clubs, and Airspace Lounges. You can also enroll in Priority Pass Select for free.

Platinum Card Members currently have unlimited complimentary access to all locations of The Centurion. Card Members may bring immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and their children under 18) OR up to two (2) companions into The Centurion Lounge. That generous policy has led to overcrowding in many locations, especially during peak hours.

TPG reported that Amex could soon restrict access to family members, so I reached out to Amex who clarified what those restrictions will be and when they’ll take effect.

New Policy

The Amex representative clarified that the changes will affect all guests, not just family members. Also the changes will take effect on the same date as the upgraded perks that we’ve been hearing about lately.

Beginning March 30, 2017, the Centurion Lounge guest policy for Platinum Card® Members will change.  All Platinum Card® Members will be limited to two total guests at no additional charge. One-day passes for any additional guests, including immediate family members, may be purchased.

Guru’s Wrap-Up

This is surprising from Amex who have been talking about all kinds of benefit improvements lately. This is terrible for bigger families who travel together, who will now have to pay to bring in extra family members.

On the other hand some might welcome the news, especially couples of those traveling solo, as it will surely help fight overcrowding in Centurion Lounges.

Regardless on which group you’re in, this is a devaluation of benefits and it’s ill times with the fee on the personal Platinum card going up to $550.

Will these changes benefit you? Or will they limit your lounge access?

  1. Good policy. It also aligns it with 2 limit in other lounges. Extra family members should get extra plat cards or parents can have a plat each to bring in their kids.

  2. Doesn’t really affect me. But I also understand how it impacts big families.I don’t see many big families in lounges anyway so I think this was just unnecessary from amex.It wont really clear up lounges and it wont affect that many people. They’ll just get some bad press.

  3. I find this new policy fair because we travel mostly in the summer and the lounges are packed with kids running around unattended. If this policy is enforced, it would be nice to be able to relax while we wait.
