New “Refer-A-Friend” Limited-Time Offers, Earn Extra 5X at Supermarkets

Beginning today on March 9th, 2023, American Express is introducing a limited-time offer that gives eligible Card Members a chance to earn even more rewards at U.S. supermarkets.

If an eligible Card Member refers a friend and the friend applies before June 7, 2023, and the application results in an approved account and the friend gets the Card, the Card Member will earn an additional 5X Membership Rewards Points, or 5X Miles, or 5% Cash Back (depending on their eligible Card) per dollar they spend on eligible U.S. supermarket purchases for three months (starting from the first date the referred friend’s account is opened), on up to $25,000. For example, eligible Delta Skymiles Reserve American Express Card Members will earn 6X Miles on eligible U.S. supermarket purchases (1X Miles on eligible purchases plus 5X Bonus Miles) and American Express Green Card Members will earn 6X Membership Rewards Points on eligible U.S. Supermarket purchases (1X on eligible purchases + 5 additional Membership Rewards Points), for three months, on up to $25,000. But obviously you wouldn’t want to use a Delta card for grocery purchases.

The extra earning is also in addition to the referral bonus that you normally get. That could vary between 10,000 Membership Rewards and possibly as high as 45,000 in some rare cases. Learn more about American Express referrals.

If you apply through referral links, there are also some limited time welcome bonuses that are much better than the usual offers. That includes an offer for 150K points and $200 credit for Amex Platinum, 90K points and $200 credit for Amex Gold, or $400 and waived fee for Blue Cash Preferred.
