American Airlines Accounts Shutdown
American Airlines is shutting down AAdvantage accounts. Reports started coming in about a week ago, and now there’s a second waive of shutdowns, even more widespread I believe.
There’s many data points on Reddit about this. The shutdowns are mainly targeted at those abusing credit card rewards. That’s for Citi American Airlines credit cards. In this case that means getting multiple bonuses on the same card through targeted offers. Most shut downs seem to be for mailer offers that don’t have a 24-48 month restriction. If you applied by email offers it looks like could be safe for now (or just safer).
American Airlines is not really letting everyone know that their accounts have been shut down. You might want to go into your accounts and try to make an award booking. If you’re not able to do so, then you should worry. People are told to call a specific number where reps could inform you of the account shutdown.
Besides not being able to book anything, if you accounts are shut down, then award flight that were already booked might be in jeopardy as well. So definitely look into this if you are affected.
Have you been affected by this? Let me know in the comments.

AA rookies can be excused for this kind of mistake. We’re all human. But if you’ve flown the airline even once and yet you’re still indulging in shenanigans like these, — maybe it’s time for an agonizing reappraisal.
Get off your high horse.
