You Can Upgrade Red Aviator To Silver After 3 Months

In case you missed it, you can now apply for the Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard. It comes with a 40K bonus and a $95 annual fee. It’s a decent bonus, but there’s currently a 50K bonus on the Citi cards also for those who are eligible.

But more frequent flyers and those who can put lots of spend on this card might me more interested in the Silver Aviator Card. That card is not available for sign ups right now, but View from the Wing reports that it is possible to get it as an upgrade after you apply for the Red Aviator card.

Turns out that new Red Aviator cardmembers can upgrade to Silver after 90 days. On top of that you won’t get charged the higher annual fee in your first year (Silver Aviator has a $195 AF). So you can get the Red Aviator card, 40,000 AA bonus, pay the $95 annual fee and then upgrade to Silver in 90 days.

What’s the deal with the Silver Aviator card? It is pretty lucrative if you can spend $50,000 a year:

  • 5,000 elite-qualifying miles for every $20,000 you spend annually (up to 10,000 miles each year)
  • 6000 elite-qualifying dollars (3,000 earned at $25,000 and $50,000 spend)
  • Companion certificate good for up to 2 guests at $99 each, issued annually after your account anniversary when you spend $30,000 or more
  • Earn 3 miles for every $1 you spend when you use your card on eligible American Airlines purchases
  • $100 Global Entry application fee credit
