WOW Air Could Drop All California Routes

Iceland’s low-cost WOW Air has been in financial trouble for some time now. Icelandair was supposed to buy them, but the plans got scrapped last minute. Now WOW Air is in negotiations with new investors for a capital infusion. But the airlines is also looking to cut costs by getting rid of a number of employees and airplanes, including the Airbus A330s that it flies on its San Francisco and Los Angeles routes to Reykjavik, SFgate reports.

In a move aimed at “restructuring and simplifying its operations”, WOW plans to cut  111 jobs – about 10 percent of its workforce — and offload nine planes from its 20-aircraft fleet, including all four of its A330s and four Airbus A321s. There’s no set date when yet for when that is expected to happen.

Without widebodies like the A330, WOW Air won’t have aircraft capable to travel between Reykjavik and the West Coast. The airline recently changed its San Francisco-Reykjavik schedule from year-round to seasonal, but it still offers year-round A330 service from Los Angeles. WOW also uses an A330 for its Reykjavik-New Delhi service, which just started recently.

The airline said all its existing routes will continue to operate through December and early January, but it expects to announce soon how its routes and schedules will change after that date. Passengers booked on flights being cancelled will be notified.
