United has increased the charge for passengers’ first checked bag by $5. The move announced Friday, matches the same price announced by JetBlue earlier in the week and will apply to tickets purchased on or after August 31st. It will now cost you $30 for your first checked bag.
Fuel prices have increased more than 20 percent over the past year, so airlines are looking for ways to increase revenue.
A second checked bag will cost $40 on flights in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Caribbean and Central America, United said. The fee will be $50 for flights to and from Canada.
