Swiss Grounds A220 Fleet for Engine Issues

Swiss has grounded its fleet of Airbus SE A220 jets after diverting a flight from London to Geneva due an engine fault, the latest in a series of technical issues with the turbines made by Pratt & Whitney. The carrier has suspended flights of the model in order to carry out inspections, according to a spokesman. Swiss operates 29 A220s, making it the biggest operator in the world of the aircraft.

The grounding will affect a quarter of its fleet and will lead to cancellations.

“Swiss has decided to carry out an engine inspection of the A220 fleet. For this reason, all A220s must undergo a comprehensive inspection,” Blick newspaper cited a company spokesman as saying.

An Airbus spokesman said it was supporting Swiss with its daily operations to minimize any disruption and would support any official investigation.
