You probably heard about the Bluebird/Serve shutdowns in early January and most likely were affected by it. For a while it looked like Amex eased down and wasn’t shutting down anymore cards. We all suspected that a second round would come, and it has.
Today there’s a new wave of emails telling people that the loading capabilities on their cards have been suspended. I received one such email regarding my Serve card that survived last time around. I have used it heavily in these two months and also put some regular spend on it, hoping it would help. Well it didn’t.
Here’s the text of today’s email:
We are writing to let you know that we have observed unusual usage patterns on your American Express Serve Account. Because of this, effective immediately, you will no longer be able to add money to your Account.1 We have made this change in accordance with Section 15.d of our Consumer User Agreement, which you can view here.
Please be aware that you still have full access to the funds on your Account and can withdraw them at any time. Any applicable monthly fees continue to apply.
If you would like to close your Account, you may do so online via your Profile page here. Then, scroll down to the Close Account section and click “Close Account.”

This Green Serve was opened in November. My other Serve card that was opened a few days after the January shutdowns hasn’t received an email yet, although it had about the same spending and loading pattern. But I’m guessing it won’t last long. We should see another round of shutdowns soon, maybe in two months.
