New Yorkers Ordered to Stay Home

Governor Andrew Cuomo has ordered New Yorkers to stay at home for the foreseeable future. This move follows a similar order by California’s Governor Gavin Newsom just yesterday.

Only limited businesses are allowed to operate. People must remain home other than going outside for exercise. Cuomo said New Yorkers should stay indoors and shouldn’t take public transportation unless necessary. You can read the full details of the order here.

Cases across the state surged by 2,950 overnight to 7,102. More than half of the state’s cases are concentrated in NYC and surrounding areas. These numbers are expected to increase as Cuomo confirmed that 10,000 people per day are now being tested in NYS.

Also yesterday, the state Senate passed a bill that provides paid sick leave to New York workers who are in isolation or under quarantine due to the coronavirus. Under the bill, employees at companies with more than 100 employees would be provided at least two weeks of paid sick leave during any isolation or quarantine due to COVID-19. That same standard will apply for public employers as well, like school districts, counties and cities, according to the legislation.
