Marriott to End 5K Transfer Bonus for 3 Partners
Marriott bought Starwood Hotels & Resorts more than six years ago. After the merger, Marriott kept one great perk of the SPG program, which was the 5,000 miles bonus when transferring 20,000 SPG points. SPG points converted 1:3 to Marriott points, so that transfer bonus remained the same as you can now get 5,000 bonus miles when transferring 60,000 points to partner airlines (3-to-1 ratio with most programs).
But that bonus will not last long for some some popular airlines. An email from Marriott, titled “Points-to-Miles Benefits Update”, reads as follows:
Beginning October 31, 2022, the 5,000 bonus points-to-miles incentive with American Airlines will end. However, the everyday benefits you’re accustomed to receiving will continue, and you can still convert points to miles on a 3:1 basis.
View from the Wing reports that it’s not only American Airlines. The 5,000 miles transfer bonus will also end on the same date for Delta SkyMiles and Avianca LifeMiles.
Guru’s Wrap-up
Marriott points are not very valuable compared to other currencies. Transferring them to partners doesn’t get you any great value either, since the ratio is 3 to 1. But that added 5,000 miles transfer bonus made it a little better.
If you are planning to transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to any of the affected airlines, then you should do so before the end of the month. And I wouldn’t be surprised if more partners join the list.
