After SPG announced hotel category changes for 2018, Marriott followed with its own list. While SPG’s did have more hotels getting more expensive, it was somewhat neutral. On the other hand Marriott’s list has lots of hotels moving up a category or more. Over 20% of Marriott’s properties are moving up. Yup, you read that right. You can see all the Marriott Hotel Category Changes For 2018 here.
Marriott Hotel Category Changes For 2018
Starting on March 5, 2018, there will be 1,082 Marriott properties moving up a category and only 247 properties are moving down. That’s clearly a devaluation of Marriott Rewards points. It also affect the value of Chase Marriott Rewards credit cards. Not only the bonus is now less in cash value, but with these changes there’ll be 392 fewer properties where you can use your free night certificates. As Frequent Miler points out, 620 Category 5 properties are moving up and only 228 Category 6 properties are moving down. Free night certificates can only be used in a category 1-5 Marriott.
Take a moment to review these changes now, if you have upcoming stays planned on Marriott properties. If your favorite hotel or resort is moving up to a higher category, you can at least still book now at the current redemption rate before the 2018 category changes go into effect. If it’s moving down, then hopefully you can wait till then to book your reward stay.
