JetBlue Increases Prices for Checked Bags

JetBlue has increased prices for checked bags by as much as $10.

JetBlue now charges $35 for the first checked bag and $50 for a second bag when you add them at least 24 hours before departure. If you decide to add checked bags within 24 hours of departure, prices jump to $45 for the first bag and $60 for the second. Previously these fees would vary between $30 and $50.

The fee for 3rd checked bag is $125, and for 4th checked bag (or more) is $150.

The New York based airline did not make an announcement about these fee increases, but the new prices are already showing on its website. The airline did share the following statement with TPG:

The cost of doing business has gone up significantly due to increased wages, higher fuel costs, and other inflationary pressure, and we remain unprofitable since COVID. While we don’t like increasing fees, it’s one step we are taking to get our company back to profitability and cover the increased costs of transporting bags. JetBlue continues to believe customers shouldn’t have to choose between a low fare and a great experience. By adjusting fees for added services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone.

The news comes after Alaska Airlines raised its checked bags fees early in the year, and then American Airlines announcing similar increases today.

How to Get Free Checked Bags with JetBlue

While checking a bag has become costlier, there are still a few options to avoid paying at all.

If you book JetBlue’s Blue Plus fares, you get one checked bag. Mint fares include two checked bags. And, on transatlantic flights, Blue and Blue Extra fares also include one checked bag.

Mosaic elites (and eligible travel companions completing the same itinerary) always get 2 checked bags, and JetBlue Plus and JetBlue Business Cardmembers (and up to 3 eligible travel companions completing the same itinerary) get one free checked bag.
