Celebrate the 10th anniversary of Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 29th in New York City and Los Angeles with American Express. Visit eligible bookstores to get a $25 gift card.

As part of American Express’ ongoing effort to support small businesses and with the renaissance of reading on the rise, spearheaded by trends such as #BookTok, American Express is partnering with the American Booksellers Association (ABA), and six independent bookstores across New York and Los Angeles to encourage Card Members to support the following small businesses:

  • New York
    • The Lit. Bar: The only independent brick and mortar bookstore in the Bronx after owner Noelle Santos saw the last bookstore in her neighborhood close, she was determined to bring accessible reading back to The Bronx.
    • Book Club Bar: A husband-and-wife-owned bookshop opened right after the pandemic (and bar!) open daily until midnight in the East Village
    • Greenlight: A woman-owned bookstore in Fort Greene, Brooklyn which has become a cultural hub for book lovers and writers who look to their community to connect over new discoveries and conversations.
  • Los Angeles
    • Octavia’s Bookshelf: Pasadena’s first-ever BIPOC independent bookstore founded by Nikki High who is a science fiction writer herself focused on celebrating diverse authors year round with a curated selection of books from international BIPOC authors.
    • The Last Bookstore: California’s largest used and new book and record store – who recently hosted two weeks of booze-friendly overnight stays for book lovers!
    • The Ripped Bodice: First-ever independent bookstore that focused on romance novels that is woman, and queer-owned.

Just visit one of these bookstores from noon to 3pm to get your $25 gift card. Bonus gift cards will be available as long as supplies last.
