Google Adds Filter for Essential Workers to Find Discounted or Free Hotel Rooms
Hotels, airlines and other companies are providing free services and products to essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Google has stepped up to make it even easier to find these offers, at least for hotels. You can search Google Travel to find these deals.
I did a search for hotels in NYC and in the search results page, there is also an option to add a filter for special room offers for COVID-19 responders. If you apply the filter, you should get results for discounted stays or even free ones, depending on the location.
The new filter is currently available the United States and the United Kingdom only, to help frontline workers find accommodations. It will roll out to additional countries soon. To actually book the discounted rates, you need to call the hotel in most cases. The COVID-19 responder room filter doesn’t display the discount rate online, so you will not see a free room displayed in the map.
Participating Hotels
Currently, the new Google Travel filter shows deals for COVID-19 responders from the following hotel brands:
- Choice Hotels International
- Hilton
- IHG Hotels & Resorts
- American Hotels & Lodging Association
- Some independent hotels
Who Qualifies
Requirements could vary depending on the hotel. These are some of the professions that will qualify you for discounts or free stays:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- American Red Cross volunteers
- FEMA workers
- Firefighters
- Mass transit employees
- Essential workers in food and service industry
