The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued its highest travel warning for China, urging Americans to avoid all nonessential travel because of the outbreak of coronavirus. The State Department raised its China travel warning to level 3, urging U.S. citizens to “reconsider travel” to the country due to the coronavirus outbreak. The State Department also raised the travel warning for the entire Hubei province to level 4, advising against any travel there, noting that U.S. officials have “limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens” in the province.

Anyone who must travel should talk with a health-care provider first, the CDC said, especially older adults and travelers with underlying health issues who may be at risk for more severe effects of the disease.

Chinese officials are also taking measures to contain the virus. They have locked down many cities in Hubei province, including Wuhan which is thought to be the epicenter of the outbreak. All air and rail transportation in and out the province has been halted, but that might be too late already. Wuhan is a city with 11 million residents, and its mayor said that 5 million people had left the city before travel restrictions were imposed ahead of the Chinese New Year.

The U.S. government is evacuating American citizens from Wuhan, with priority given to those who are most at risk from the coronavirus.

The death toll from the new coronavirus in China now stands at 106, with the number of infections almost doubling in a day to more than 4,500. It has already made its way to the U.S. as well. The number of confirmed cases has risen to five, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday. The five patients have all traveled recently to Wuhan, China. The five confirmed cases are in Maricopa County, Arizona; Los Angeles County and Orange County, California; Everett, Washington; and another in Chicago.
