American Express Makes it Easier to Use Uber Credits
The Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the best premium travel cards out there. It comes with a huge fee, but also offers lots of perks that make it worth keeping it long term. But you need to maximize those perks to make sense of that $550 annual fee. One of those perks is the $200 in Uber credits that you get every calendar year. That’s a serious benefit for those who use Uber often. The Centurion Card also has this benefit.
Amex Platinum Uber Credit
As a Platinum cardmember, you receive $15 in Uber credits for U.S. rides each month plus a bonus $20 in December, delivered through an exclusive Uber app experience. Plus, become an Uber VIP, where available. You don’t need to meet minimum ride requirements and be connected to drivers with top user ratings.
What’s changing?
Today American Express sent out an email to Platinum Card holders with a notice about a change on how the Uber credit is handled in the Uber app. Here’s what is says:
Starting in September, your Uber Cash will be set to automatically apply your benefit to your next ride so that you can easily take advantage of your benefit every month.
To receive this new experience, you must download Uber App version 3.363.10000or later for iOS or version 4.274.10000 or later for Android, and your eligible Platinum or Centurion Card must be a method of payment in your Uber account.
That means that you no longer need to manually select Uber Cash as your form of payment, in order to make sure you use the credits. It will be automatically applied first if you have credit. If you do not want to use the Uber credit, you can also go in and change the form of payment to something else before booking a ride.

Not a huge change, but it does make it easier to use up your credits every month. Keep in mind that these credits can also be used for Uber Eats. You can read more about it here. It would be nice if American Express paid out this credit once every 6 months like they do with other benefits. But still, at $200 per year, this gives cardholders lots of value.
