You Can Now Use MR Points On Expedia… But Don’t!

American Express and Expedia, Inc. announced the launch of a new integration that enables eligible U.S. Card Members enrolled in the Membership Rewards program to use points for purchases on Expedia.com®. Card Members can choose to use points for Prepaid Hotel and Flight purchases using an eligible Card at checkout for all or part of their eligible purchase. Through this integration, American Express is the first partner to introduce pay-with-points functionality for airfare on Expedia.

How To Use MR Points At Expedia

To participate, you must have a valid U.S. Membership Rewards enrolled American Express® Consumer Card, Business Card from American Express OPEN or American Express® Corporate Card, and be authorized to use points.

Using points online on Expedia.com is easy:

  • First sign in or create your Expedia account so you can see your Member Pricing discounts.
  • Once you are signed in, you can link your eligible Card to the Program. Please know that this action must be taken prior to making a purchase in order to use Membership Rewards points. Only one eligible Card can be linked per Expedia account.
  • After you link your eligible Card, you can view the point balance and its associated dollar value for use on Expedia.com.
  • At checkout, select the Membership Rewards option and enter the dollar amount you would like applied to all or part of a Prepaid Hotel and Flight purchase. Membership Rewards points cannot be used toward bundled packages.

Is It Worth It?

And now the main question. Is it really worth it? As you might expect, the answer is no. Here’s a sample hotel stay:

Yup, that’s not a typo. If you do the math, you will get a value of 0.7 cents per Membership Rewards point when redeeming at Expedia. Definitely a bad option for using your MR points.
