American Airlines Tightens 24-Hour Refund Policy for Last-Minute Bookings
American Airlines has updated its 24-hour refund policy, eliminating a customer-friendly benefit that allowed travelers to receive a full refund on tickets booked as little as two days before departure. Going forward, tickets must now be purchased at least seven days before departure to qualify for a refund within 24 hours of booking.
The change aligns American’s policy with the minimum requirement set by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Travelers who book flights within seven days of departure will generally no longer be eligible for a refund to their original form of payment if they cancel within 24 hours. Depending on the fare purchased, they may instead receive a travel credit. Award tickets booked with AAdvantage miles are not affected by this change and can still be canceled for a full mileage redeposit before departure.
