Back in 2017, Airbnb Experiences was launched. It put Airbnb into competition with traditional tour operators. But, Experiences were limited to just one day excursions. Now Airbnb is going one step further with the launch of a multi-day tour service called Airbnb Adventures. To push the new offering Airbnb is also giving out $15 in credits for experiences. That’s part of a $55 signup bonus for new Airbnb customers.
In its announcement Thursday about the expansion of its single-day tours, Airbnb Experiences, the company pointed to examples of Airbnb Adventures, including a three-day trip tracking lions with Samburu warriors in Kenya ($515 per person); a six-day Slow Slow Food Safari in the Galapagos ($3,500); a five-day Mystical Oman Trek ($1,000), and camping on a cliff overnight in Colorado ($1,000).
Airbnb Adventures will range from $79 to $5,000, depending on the length of the trip and the complexity of the journey. On average, Airbnb says these trips will cost $750 for seven days, or $110 a day
The all-inclusive trips include guides, meals, on-the-ground transport, and accommodations, along with any gear that might be necessary. The tour price does not include airfare.
Airbnb said is has more than 200 tours available at launch. The local host arranges everything. Many of the hosts responsible for the tours are individual hosts or local operators, rather than traditional tour operators or well-recognized brands. Airbnb says that it works with the Adventure Travel Trade Association on safety issues and best practices for the tours.
Airbnb is not the only service for such adventures. Expedia has offered tours and activities for years. In 2014, TripAdvisor bought activity-booking platform Viator and peer-to-peer tour marketplace Tripbod. So the options are there already, Airbnb is just moving into their turf.
If you want to try out these new tours offered by Airbnb, you can sign up here to get started. You get $40 for your first stay and $15 for your first Experience which includes Adventures as well.
