Delta Launches Basic Business Fares

Delta has officially expanded its fare lineup by introducing Basic fares in its premium cabins, giving travelers a lower-priced option when flying in Delta First, Delta Premium Select, and Delta One.

The new fare types are available now in select markets for flights starting in September. They are designed for customers who want a premium seat at a lower price but also with less perks. That means no seat selection, fewer miles than more expensive options, paying a fee for changes or cancellations and no same-day standby or confirmed flight changes.

What’s New?

Delta is adding the following fare options:

  • Delta First Basic
  • Delta Premium Select Basic
  • Delta One Basic (Basic Business)

These join Delta’s existing Classic and Extra fare options.

What Do You Give Up?

Passengers booking a Basic premium fare will still receive the premium seat and onboard service associated with that cabin, but with several important restrictions.

According to Delta, Basic premium fares have limited benefits:

  • No seat selection
  • Reduced checked bag allowance
  • Lower mileage earn
  • No complimentary or paid upgrades
  • No same-day confirmed or same-day standby travel changes
  • Changes or cancellations for a fee
  • No access to Delta One Lounges when traveling on a Delta One Basic ticket.

Guru’s Wrap-up

United launched basic business fares earlier this year and now Delta is another airlines that is unbundling premium travel. Travelers may benefit from slightly lower fares, but they’ll need to pay close attention to exactly what they’re buying. A Delta One seat no longer guarantees Delta One Lounge access, and premium fares can now come with reduced flexibility and fewer loyalty benefits.

If you’re shopping based solely on price, these new Basic fares may make sense. However, before booking, compare the price difference against the Classic fare and decide if that discount is worth it.
