Vitaminwater is issuing a challenge. Ditch your device for a year, and win $100,000. That’s the only requirement, just don’t use your phone or anyone else’s, for a full year. Laptops and desktop computers are OK to use, as are voice-activated devices like Google Home or Amazon Echo.

But first you must be selected to participate, and that’s the hard part. Enter the contest by sharing a post on Twitter or Instagram explaining what you’d do instead of scrolling through social media posts. All legal residents of the United States who are 18 or older and own and use a smartphone are eligible to enter, Vitaminwater said. Applications will be judged on originality, brand relevance, humor and other factors.

If you use a smartphone for work or other commitments that you cannot get out of, then you “need not apply,” according to the official rules.

But how will they ensure that you follow the rules you might wonder. No they will not take your word. The company will administer a lie detector test to help ensure honesty and adherence to contest rules.

If you can only last nine months, you will receive $10,000. But if you’re in that long, then three more months will get you the full prize of $100,000.

How to Enter

HThere are 2 ways to enter: 

• Twitter: During the Contest Period, create a Tweet explaining how you would use your year if you took a break from your smartphone and share it on Twitter including the hashtags #NoPhoneforaYear and #contest (your “Submission”). See the judging criteria below for guidance. Your account settings must be set to “unprotected” and/or “public” in order for your Tweets and Submission to be viewable by Sponsor and its agents. In addition, your post(s) with your Submission(s) must remain up through the end of the Contest Period or they will not be considered.
• Instagram: During the Contest Period, create an Instagram post explaining how you would use your year if you took a break from your smartphone and share it on Instagram including the hashtags #NoPhoneforaYear and #contest (your “Submission”). See the judging criteria below for guidance. In order for your Submission to be eligible, your Instagram profile must be public and thus viewable by the Sponsor and its agents. In addition, your post(s) with your Submission(s) must remain up through the end of the Contest Period or they will not be considered. If you do not have the Instagram App, you may download it through the application store on your mobile device.

The Contest begins on December 11, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”), ends on January 8, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
