Via Offering 20% Discount on Rides in NYC
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City’s subway system will temporarily close for four hours overnight as the city and state combat the coronavirus crisis. The subway system will shutter nightly from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., starting next Wednesday, May 6th. The closure will affect an estimated 11,000 riders nightly.
Now Via is offering a discount for those who need to travel during these hours. You can get 20% off on all rides, which are now private during the pandemic. This actually applies to all rides for now, so it not really specific to those subway shutdown times. Whether you’re commuting to an early morning shift or heading home after a long day, you can take a private Via ride at a 20% discount. This might be for NYC only, but worth checking in other cities as well. No promo code is required, the discount should apply automatically.
The MTA is also launching the Essential Connector program to help provide financial support for essential workers that need to travel while the subway isn’t operating. More details to come, but in the meantime make sure to register online if you’re an essential worker.
If you have never used the app, you can download it here and use my referral code danny7r4dadada to get a $20 signup bonus. Via is currently available only in NYC, Chicago and Washington. It works the same way as Uber and Lyft, but only within the eligible areas.
