Robinhood Gold Card Adds 3% Foreign Transaction Fee

Robinhood is making an important change to its credit card for new applicants. Beginning July 1, 2026, the Robinhood Gold Card will charge a 3% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency for customers who are approved on or after that date.

The good news is that existing Robinhood Gold Card holders will not be affected for now, according to information provided by Robinhood support.

What’s Changing?

The updated card terms now state:

“You may be charged a 3% foreign transaction fee if you transact in a foreign currency. If you transact in a foreign currency, the exchange rate is based on Visa’s exchange rate calculator. You can use Visa’s exchange rate calculator to estimate the exchange rate for your purchases. When you travel, thereโ€™s no need to provide a travel notice.”

Robinhood support (HT: whitfin) confirmed the following:

“Robinhood has introduced a new foreign exchange (FX) fee policy for the credit card. Starting 7/1, Credit will begin charging a new FX (foreign exchange) fee for customers who are onboarded on or after 7/1. Current credit card customers are not impacted by this change for now.”

What This Means

The Robinhood Gold Card launched with no foreign transaction fees, making it an attractive option for international travelers. And this is a card that you want to have in your wallet for everyday spend, so you can earn 3% cash back on every purchase. This policy change removes one of the card’s more competitive features for frequent travelers.

Fortunately, anyone who already has the Robinhood Gold Card should continue to enjoy no fees abroad, at least for now. Robinhood’s wording suggests that existing cardholders are grandfathered under the current terms. But who knows how long that will last.

Guru’s Wrap-up

This is a disappointing change for new Robinhood Gold Card applicants. A 3% foreign transaction fee puts the card at a disadvantage compared to many travel cards. If you already have the Robinhood Gold Card, there’s good news. Robinhood says existing cardholders won’t be affected for now.
