Iceland Lifts All COVID-19 Restrictions Friday
Iceland will lift all remaining COVID-19 restrictions Friday. This includes domestic and entry restrictions. That means that it will be easier to visit the country and there will no longer be restrictions such as mask mandates, early closing hours for bars and more.
That news revealed by the Minister of Health Willum Thor Thorsson after a meeting on Wednesday. The decision was made unanimously by government members and in accordance with the suggestions of the chief epidemiologist, who presented the government with three different scenarios, Mbl reports. The main reasoning behind the decision to lift restrictions is that that the pandemic is so widespread that restrictions do not seem to suffice to limit its spread.
The virus, though, is by no means gone, and authorities suggest that those who are ill stay at home. Besides, caution should be exercised around those who are at risk of developing serious illness from COVID-19.
It was also announced that all public PCR testing will be ceased in favor of rapid antigen tests. A positive result from a rapid test will suffice to confirm a COVID-19 infection. Isolation will not be required for those who test positive, but it is recommended.
Iceland has administered more doses per 100 people than most European countries. Iceland has given over 220 doses per 100 people, compared to 164.3 administered in the United States. Full vaccination rate is also higher in Iceland when compared to the US, 79% versus 65%.
