How to Get Your Chase Credit Card Number Before It Arrives

Update: Secure Message trick no longer works, but Moneydance/Quicken trick still should. You can also add cards to mobile wallets and start using them right away, including Chase business cards. Read below for more details.

Chase is one of the credit card issuers that never give you the credit card numbers before your physical card arrives in the mail. That’s frustrating when you have big spending coming up, but you don’t have the card yet and are not able to use it even though you have been approved and the card shows in your Chase account online. American Express usually gives you this option when you are approved. US Bank lets you see the full card info online, after you activate it.

Chase on the other hand doesn’t do either of those things. But luckily there’s an easy trick that will get you our full Chase credit card number. You also need to guess your expiration date, but it is not as hard as it sounds.

A family member recently applied for a new card after seeing the offer in the “Selected for You” section of the account online. These are offers that bypass the Chase 5/24 rule and are usually the same as the public offer. The person applied and was approved and the card shows in their Chase account online soon after. But there, you only see the last four digits of the card.

They had some spending that they could knock out online (for a medical bill) before the card arrived in the mail. After some googling I came across this article that shows how to get your card number. We tested it and it worked.

Guide to Chase Ultimate Rewards® points

How it Works

Here’s the steps:

  • Log in and find the Secure Message option in your Chase account
  • Send a secure message using the Card that you need the number for (select it from the list showing last 4)
  • Enter a message and send (I selected other, and asked if they know when my card will arrive)
  • Then go into your Chase app (not website) and look in Secure Message in the sent folder
  • Open the message that you just sent, and in there it will show the full account number.

Now the next step is to figure out the expiration date. To do this, you just need to add 4 or 5 years to the approval date, and you have your expiration date. So if you get approved today on 11/2/2019, your expiration date will most likely be 11/2/2023 or 11/2/2024.

Use Quicken/Moneydance

“If you use Quicken and set up your Chase account for automatic downloads, you should be able to get your full 16-digit CC account number,” John says in the comments below. Just select that Chase account and hit “Edit Account Details”.

Another way that I have seen work recently is when setting up the account in Moneydance (personal finance app for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and iPad). You will see the full card number once connection is completed.

How to Start Using Chase Cards Even Without Having Card Number

You can now add Chase cards to your digital wallet and start using it to pay in stores, online and in merchant apps as soon as you are approved for a new card. You do not need to have the physical card in hand, or the credit card number itself. To add the card to your digital wallet:

  • Sign in to the Chase Mobile® app.
  • Choose your new credit card.
  • Go to your digital wallet and then add your card.

You can use this to add your new Chase card to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay and even PayPal by adding it to Chase Pay first.

Guru’s Wrap-up

This is a super useful trick for using your Chase card before you get it in the mail. Sometimes people apply for a new card when they have a big purchase to make, and having to wait for the card in the mail makes it impossible to use it right away. Thankfully some of these tricks should work and get you going right away as soon as you are approved.

Check out some of the best offer listed above for Chase cards. Keep in mind that the Chase 5/24 rule applies, so if you have had more than 5 new credit cards in the last 24 months you will not be approved. If you’re not sure how to check your Chase 5/24 status, follow these steps.

Let me know if these tricks work for you, of if you have any other tricks up your sleeve.

  1. does this still work?

  2. Just tried the secure messages technique and it didn’t work, the full card number was not displayed.

  3. Chase removed OFX connection support, so it’s no longer possible to obtain the credit card number using Quicken or Moneydance. Visa cards are usually available to add to the digital wallet before they arrive, but this isn’t the case for Mastercard.

  4. I tried using the Moneydance option, but it just showed “Credit Card (USD)” instead of any sort of number under the Moneydance+ windows. Is there another spot I should have been looking?

  5. Quicken doesn’t work

      The secure message part?
