A secured credit card is a great way to build your credit history and the Discover it Secured Card is probably the best option out there. The card has no annual fee and a decent rewards program (1% cash back on every purchase, 2% cash back at restaurants or gas stations on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter). All cash back earned during the first year will be doubled and you’ll receive a lump sum in the 13th statement.
Also it comes with no annual fee. The card also graduated to an unsecured card, which is a regular credit card.
Discover has now changed their secured card graduation process. Discover used to do this after 12 months, but now it looks like they start reviewing your secured credit card after just seven months and they keep doing monthly reviews after that. If you meet their criteria they will graduate your card early.
The application page still says that monthly reviews start after one year.
This is good news for those who are trying to fix their credit or just getting started. Getting graduated to a unsecured credit card means that you no longer need to secure your line of credit with an equal deposit. Once graduated you’ll get that security deposit mailed to you.
