Buy Avianca LifeMiles and Get 200% Bonus
Update: This offer has been extended through December 8, 2020.
If you’re looking for Avianca LifeMiles, there’s currently a new promotion that will give you the best price possible for purchasing miles. You can currently buy miles and get up to a 200% bonus.
You can buy them in 1,000 miles blocks, for $33 + Taxes. It averages out to a price of around 1.1¢ per mile, if you buy at least 101,000 miles, which is a great price for LifeMiles. Let’s look at the details of the offer and whether it makes sense to purchase, especially now with Avianca’s bankruptcy issues.
The Offer
Here’s how the bonus works:
Buy from | Up to | Bonus |
1,000 | 50,000 | 150% |
51,000 | 100,000 | 175% |
101,000 | 200,000 | 200% |
This is the highest bonus offered for purchasing Avianca LifeMiles. With that said, you should still be looking to get miles from their credit card first, or even transferring Membership Rewards points.
Offer Terms
- Promotion valid from September 8th through September 25th, 2020.
- The bonus percentage is calculated based on the amount of miles purchased.
Avianca Bankruptcy
Avianca, Latin America’s second-largest airline, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. earlier this year. However, it looks like the airline has secured funds to stay afloat for now. Colombia’s government said on August 29 that it will extend up to $370 million in loans to Avianca. If it fails to come out of bankruptcy, Bogota-based Avianca would be one of the first major carriers worldwide to go under as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has crippled world travel.
How does that affect LifeMiles? LifeMiles, Avianca’s loyalty program, is administered by a separate company and is not part of the Chapter 11 filing. Avianca customers will continue to accrue miles when they fly with Avianca for now, and can continue to redeem miles with Avianca and Star Alliance partners. If the airline does go out of business, the LifeMiles program should still function. But the value of the miles might not be the same. It is not clear if you will be able to redeem on Star Alliance partners if Avianca no longer exists.
Guru’s Wrap-Up
This is a great price for buying Avianca LifeMiles. But with the bankruptcy issues, I would not purchase miles unless you are planning on redeeming them within a few months.
