Expensive Option to Get Around Travel Restrictions, Buying a Passport

Buy a Passport to Get Around Travel Restrictions

Many countries around the world have travel restrictions in place to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. These restrictions are usually placed on foreign travelers, and often ban travel altogether or have 14-day quarantine requirements which make it effectively a ban. Due to these restrictions, the United States passport has dropped to 19th place in the World Passport Index, just before Malaysia and behind countries like Albania, Bosnia or Moldova. This ranking gives scores to each passport based on how many countries you can visit visa-free, visa on arrival, or with a visa requirement.

One way to get around restrictions is to get a second passport, and some countries will sell you one for a hefty sum and often some additional requirements. Right now some Caribbean countries are also offering discounts due to high demand for such passports. Saint Kitts and Nevis for example is selling a four-person family package for $150,000. That is down down from $190,000, Business Insider reports. to qualify for citizenship you also need to make a minimum real-estate purchase of $200,000 that must be held for at least seven years.

Saint Kitts and Nevis’s passport ranks the same as Mexico and it is useful for Americans who are currently barred from Europe and the UK. With a Saint Kitts and Nevis passport you wouldn’t need a visa to visit these countries. Other island nations such as Saint Lucia, Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, and Dominica all offer similar citizenship programs.
