Amex Changes SPG Bonuses, 2 Free Nights Instead Of Starpoints

We were expecting Amex to bring increased offers on the SPG cards, but they have changed the sign up bonus altogether, offering free nights instead of Starpoints. While this might work our to a better bonus in a best case scenario, I’d say it’s worse than the 25K bonus that’s been publicly available (and still is through referrals, Personal SPG 25K offer and Business SPG 25K offer).

The new offer, which is available on the personal and business card, gives you 2 free nights at participating SPG Category 1-5 hotels & resorts worldwide. This would be better than the current offer only if you maximize it at a Category 5 hotel for 16,000 points a night, for a total of 32,000. But remember that you won’t be able to make use of that 5th night free, and also you cant transfer free night certificates to miles. With the 25K bonus, you’d have 28k after the $3K spending and that would be enough for 5 nights at a Category 3 hotel, which is great value for the points.

Both offers expire on 10/19/2016 but I doubt many people will jump on it. The question is what happens after that date. Many people were holding on applying, hoping that Amex would bring back the 30K or even the 35K bonus. We don’t know for sure what will happen after 10/19, so it’s up to you to decide if you want to wait and see, or jump on the 25K offers.
