New $600 FHR Credit Excludes “Pay with Points” Bookings

$600 FHR Credit Excludes “Pay with Points” Bookings

American Express launched yesterday the revamped U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum Cards. Available immediately, the updated Platinum Cards now offer several new benefits, including a $600 in annual statement credits ($300 semi-annually) on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resortsยฎ or The Hotel Collection bookings through Amex Travel using the Platinum Card (two-night minimum stay with The Hotel Collection).

That’s quite an improvement from the old $200 annual credit on Amex Platinum and a brand new benefit for the Amex Business Platinum card. But with this new benefit, there’s also a change in the terms. You no longer qualify for the credit if you use Pay with Points for your FHR or THC stay. Only the charges that are charged to your eligible Platinum Card qualify.

Using Membership Rewards points for these stays is normally not a good idea anyway, since you only get a value of 1 cent per point. But keep this change in mind in case you consider it.

Old terms:

“You can receive the $200 Hotel Credit if you use Pay with Points with your eligible U.S. Platinum Card for some or all of your eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection booking if you have not already earned the credit for the year.”

New terms:

“You can use Membership Rewards Pay with Points for all or part of your eligible prepaid hotel booking. However, you can only earn the $600 Hotel Credit for charges that are charged to your eligible Platinum Card, if you have not already earned the credit for the year. Any portion of your booking covered using Pay with Points does not qualify to receive up to $300 back semi-annually.”
