US Bank Altitude Reserve Adds 5x Earning for Hotels & Car Rentals

The US Bank Altitude Reserve card was launched in 2017 as the bank’s first premier credit card offering. The main feature of this card was until now 3X Flexperks on mobile payments. That is a return of 4.5% on almost any purchase, since Flexperks points are worth 1.5 cents each when used on travel. It also earns 3x on travel purchases.

But now the card has new 5X categories:

  • Earn 5X points on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked directly in the Altitude Rewards Center.

The new benefit is already showing on the credit card page. So now you can effectively earn 7.5% on hotels and car rentals booked through the the Altitude Rewards Center. That is a great rate, if prices through their portal are competitive.

Here is the fine print for the new benefit:

You will earn four (4) additional bonus Points for every $1 in eligible Net Purchases spent on prepaid car and hotel reservations purchased in the online Altitude Rewards Center using your U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Card. Prepaid car and hotel reservations in the Rewards Center are not classified as a travel category merchant transaction and are not eligible to receive the additional points for that category. Please allow 1-2 statement billing cycles for your bonus Points to appear on your credit card statement.

Guru’s Wrap-up

It’s always nice to see more benefits to a card you already have. 5x Flexperks points, worth 7.5% cash back, is a great return for hotels and car rentals. But you should still compare prices and offers from other platforms to see if it makes sense.

The card currently has a 50,000 points welcome bonus, worth $750 on travel, if you spend $4,500 in the first 90 days of account opening. It also comes with a $400 annual fee and $75 for each additional card. But it has some good benefits such as $325 credit for eligible net travel purchases. It’s a good card to have at least for the first year.
