Virgin Atlantic Increases Award Fees
Virgin Atlantic has now raised its award ticket surcharges twice in less than a year with no warning for loyalty members.
Business class awards from the U.S. to the U.K. now carry $700 in fees one-way, nearly triple what they cost just a year ago. Flying in the other direction is even worse. Departing London in business class will now run you close to $970 in taxes and fees alone.
Even in economy, the math is not great. A round-trip to London and back still costs you 12,000 points, but now you also have to pay over $490 in cash surcharges. Depending on your travel dates, you may be better off searching for cash fares instead.
If you’re dreaming of booking a trip to London with your points, go in with eyes open. That “free” flight now comes with an increasingly expensive cash price tag.
